Spinning Stories

Before I moved to London I, and my boyfriend at the time, bought a twin tub washing machine from a friend’s Mum, and took it with us to London.   In the first place we lived we did the washing whilst sitting on the twin tub, to stop it moving around so much.  The twin tub was loaded from the top – the washing goes in one side of the machine, and then is spun in the other side.  When we moved to a smaller flat we abandoned the twin tub and went to the local laundrette.  The nearest laundrette was on Commercial Road – I only remember using it once, maybe twice, in all the time I lived there.  What I do remember is a mountain of dirty laundry erupting from the too-small laundry box in my bedroom, and both myself and my boyfriend buying new cheap underwear from Whitechapel market instead of doing the washing.
