The mother was brought up very strictly, no friends, no going out, no make-up allowed, and so this was how she approached her daughters upbringing – perhaps even more so as they are living in London – it’s much more dangerous than where she grew up.

She thought that she’d done everything possible to protect her elder daughter from any outside influence, but, at 17 she ran away from home with a teacher from her school with whom she had fallen in love. It took several weeks for them to find out what had happened – they thought that she had been abducted or worse. For many years they did not have any contact.

The mother had a second daughter, 15 years younger than the first, and she has been brought up far more leniently.
